Teen Expert Loves the “Aloha Spirit”

Aloha Spirit

Greetings my friends!  Or, I should just say, “Aloha!”  For many years, I have been a frequent vacationer to the great Island of “Oahu.”  My favorite place is Waikiki Beach, which means “spouting water.”  I try and get a few weeks a year here when my schedule permits.  I find it healing and the weather just plain awesome.  Plus, there is great shopping!

As a teen expert and youth motivational speaker, my schedule has me on the road nearly fifteen days a month.  When I need that break, I often make the journey to Hawaii and take in the “Aloha Spirit.”  Here is the spirit I try and teach the teens that I work with.  I’d like to share with you what the “Aloha Spirit” means and why I love visiting Hawaii so much.

“Aloha Spirit” is the coordination of mind and heart within each person. It brings each person to the self. Each person must think and emote good feelings to others.

  • A “Akahai” meaning kindness, to be expressed with tenderness
  • L “Lokahi” meaning unity, to be expressed with harmony
  • O “Oluolu” meaning agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness
  • H “Haahaa” meaning humility, to be expressed with modesty
  • A “Ahonui” meaning patience, to be expressed with perseverance

These are traits of character that express the charm, warmth and sincerity of Hawaii’s people.

“Aloha” is more than a word of greeting or farewell or a salutation. “Aloha” means mutual regard and affection and extends warmth in caring with no obligation in return. “Aloha” is the essence of relationships in which each person is important to every other person for collective existence. “Aloha” means to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen and to know the unknowable.

I hope you get the chance to visit Hawaii and learn to love this place as I have come to love it myself.
