Teen Expert Goes to Counseling

Youth Motivational Speaker and Teen Expert Jeff Yalden

Yesterday I had another counseling session.  Did I mention to you that I have my counselor on speed dial?  Is that too much information?

Make me the President of the United States and I would push through a bill that made everyone go to counseling.  I believe in counseling and I have been in counseling some 20 years.  I am a better man as a result of counseling and I am not afraid to admit it.  Sorry, I wasn’t born perfect.  Then again, who really is.  At least, I am aware that I am not perfect and also that I have issues.  Ha ha . . .

The lesson I learned as we discussed alcoholics verse walking in the light of health.  My counselor is a very spiritual person, but doesn’t bring it into the session unless we go in that direction.  Did I mention that I love my counselor?  She is absolutely the best.  Never does she ask, “So, how does that make you feel?”  She makes it real and gives me analogies and helps me see the bigger picture.

Anyways, when we are healthy and walking in the light of health we are free, humble, caring, unselfish, and in our right frame of mind.  We are balanced mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  However, when you deal with an alcoholic they become a person that is walking in the light of addiction.  This is when it becomes really scary.  This person in addiction becomes selfish, self absorbed, manipulative, egocentric, entitled, and can never be wrong for that they don’t see they have a problem.  This was a great session because as in all families, I deal with alcohol being an issue in my family as well.  (For the record:  I don’t drink!)

My life is the result of where I have been, where I am, and where I am going.  I don’t think we discover who we are, I think we create who we want to be.  For many years, I have searched for meaning and understanding.  If it weren’t for counseling and my growth as a man, a father, a husband, a business person, I wouldn’t be living the life I live today.  I am blessed.  I am grateful.  I am strong.  More importantly, I am healthier than I have ever been.  That is good being that I work with youth.
