Teachers and Students in Durand and Augusta, WI

I want to thank Durand and Augusta, WI for inviting me to speak to their students. Durand High School was an awesome program. Kids were great and so were the staff. At least most of them. Augusta High School was a very negative atmosphere and it was obvious from my point of view. I couldn’t wait to get out of there. The teachers just smelled hateful and I know from the beginning that they didn’t like me or the fact that they were even in the gymnasium. You can get over that for whatever reason and if you are that negative in the classroom, I’d like to motivate you to find another profession.

Many of the students from both schools have emailed me and facebooked me. I have heard everything. To the two teachers at both schools who are saying they are debriefing my assembly please understand that your negative attitude isn’t debriefing and you are doing more harm than good. How about telling your story. How about being a teacher that isn’t afraid to talk with the kids rather than at them. How about being a teacher that these kids respect and if they needed someone to go to they could go to you. How about being more professional and instead of talking about my $4800 fee to come and speak how about addressing other issues about what they liked and what they didn’t like. Perhaps, you could learn something from them.

Remember, I travel almost 15 hours to get to your school and speak for one hour. I then travel about 15 hours to the next location or home. I take time away from my family, friends, personal life, other ventures to share a message with the kids. That is who I was brought into to speak to. I pride myself on teaching young people. You can’t teach them if you can’t reach them.

I have 600 kids in your assembly. Do they all learn the same way? No. If you watched my message to the audience you would have noticed that I use seven different learning styles in my message to reach ALL the kids with something. Am I all over the board sometimes? YES. Of course I am because if you watch their television shows and listen to their music and understand video gaming you’ll see their attention span is short and all over. So, in order to connect with them I want to emulate what they see every day.

So, you didn’t like my term . . . Douchbag? Ah, do you read their facebook pages, their myspace pages, listen to them in the halls or on the streets. You are concerned about Douchbag? Really? You are missing the boat people if that offends you.

If you are going to make a difference in the lives of today’s teens than you have to change yourself and your ways rather than expecting our youth to change. Ask any child psychologist or psychologist that knows anything about today’s youth.

My goal is to come in and plant a seed. I want to connect with the youth. That is all I want to do. I am not perfect and never claimed to be the perfect speaker but know that I connect with youth.

We are all teachers. It is our job to reach and teach our youth. We motivate, inspire, encourage, teach, etc. That is all I did.

I encourage you when talking about my message that you see the whole picture and not just the fact that one word offended you.

Come on people . . . . Let’s get real and understand today’s youth. All in all, it was a great day and a defining day. How do I know? Ah, because I have seen the feedback from your kids.

Also, isn’t it sad that your kids feel they can talk to me after meeting me for one hour and they don’t feel that they can go to you? That bothers me. Maybe because you think you are perfect.

Lastly, I work with MTV. Did you really think I would be wearing a shirt and tie? Did you think I was going to give some Mickey Mouse talk? What were you thinking?

Students . . . You were great. For those of you that enjoyed my visit, you are the reason I was there. For those of you that didn’t like me, I am sorry that you didn’t see the whole message and the picture of the message.
