Jeff Yalden Shares His Message With Garfield Middle School

On March 13, 2013, Youth Motivational Speaker Jeff Yalden visited Garfield Middle School in Garfield, New Jersey.

From the moment we arrived, the amazing students made us feel welcome. In fact, at least 15 of them greeted Jeff at the trunk of our car and asked if they could help with anything. They opened the school doors for us and as we walked into the cafeteria, the students who were eating breakfast started cheering. We were so impressed with their excitement and hospitality.

Garfield Middle School has approximately 1,100 students in grades 6-8. Their slogan, “Bullies Never, Champions Forever” is proudly displayed on the front of the school.

The students were divided into two groups for the middle school assemblies. The first group had all of the 8th graders and half of the 7th grade. Jeff’s complete message is usually an hour and 20 minutes long and the schedule necessitated that he cut it in half to 40 minutes for this assembly. Therefore, Jeff chose to focus on respect with that group of students.

During the second assembly, Jeff had 50 minutes to speak. That group consisted of all of the 6th graders and the other half of the 7th grade. In addition to sharing his message about respect, he also focused on not pushing away people who care about you. Jeff encouraged the students to lose their egos and open their hearts.

The students were incredibly respectful and attentive to Jeff. Teachers later commented that they have never seen them so quiet.  At one point, Jeff noted the beautiful blending amongst the students: “I love the diversity in this room. You are like one big quilt…different colors, sizes and shapes all woven together. I love it.”

During lunch, students had the opportunity to visit with Jeff and purchase his “Take Time To Think” bracelets, t-shirts, posters and his new book. He enjoyed chatting with various students and enjoyed his time with them.

This young man told Jeff that he spends 30 minutes every morning doing his hair. We loved his originality, unique personality and self-confidence.

That evening we returned for the Parents Program. Students in the cooking class had made appetizers for the event…

We were really pleased that between 250 – 300 parents and students attended the program that night.

For the evening message, Jeff focused on the importance of respect, responsibility and relationships. He encouraged parents and students to make sure the doors of communication are wide open. After the event, Jeff paused for pictures and chatted with various families and teens who had attended.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Garfield Middle School. The principal and vice-principals were incredibly warm and welcoming and the students were sweet and amazing. We hope the students take Jeff’s messages about respect to heart and that they make sure that every student feels included. If they treat each other with the same respect that they showed us, they will have an awesome environment in their school.
