Hair Extensions for Teenagers

So, I arrive home from a wonderful trip to California where I spoke at four great schools and the first person I get to see upon my arrival is my wonderful daughter, Tori. We had an appointment to go to which created fun bonding time just me and her. During our drive she informed me that she wanted hair extensions. Now, I am a guys guy but I am also somewhat of a metrosexual. I am into fashion, clothes, styles, feelings, sensitive, emotional, etc. Yeah, I am borderline WOMAN I think (not really).

Hair extensions? Where does this come from? Why?

Let me explain . . . My daughter is absolutely beautiful. She is stunning with glowing reddish/auburn hair that other women would die for. Her hair is naturally curly which leads me to wonder why she straightens her hair to curl it again. Too high maintenance if you ask me. Anyways, back to the hair extensions . . .

We get back from our appointment and I drop her off at work where we find out that someone made a mistake and my daughter had the chance to stay and work or she could of easily just taken the day off. I wanted her to work because she has a habit of spending money she don’t have (I have the money that she spends). What did she choose to do? She took the day off! Dammit!

So, she asks me for money and she would pay me back when she gets her check. “How much are the hair extensions”, I ask. She replies, “$100″! I am thinking $100 for hair extensions. That is crazy.

So, immediately I think to myself, “Why doesn’t she just shave her head like I do?” I mean, imagine the amount of money she would save. No shampoo, conditioner, brushes, hair spray, straightener, curling iron, etc. WOW . . . that money alone she could afford not to work.

I am stupid though. I don’t understand so I give her the money ($200 in case) and she returns home later that night with beautiful hair extensions and a shopping spree to TJ Maxx.

I get $85 returned to me.

My question to you . . .

Why does such a beautiful young lady feel so self conscious that she needs hair extensions to be beautiful? Why can’t we accept the hair we’ve been given? Why can’t we look in the mirror and see how beautiful we really are? Why do we take a day off work when we are supposed to work and we can use the money? Why do we do a lot of what we do?

It’s all about choices and personal self-respect. You are special and you are unique. Love yourself and don’t think that fake hair extensions will give you the beauty that people on the outside will see. People on the outside looking in will see the beauty from within. If someone is going to judge you by your looks and see the hair extensions or whatever you’ve done to enhance your looks and say, “Wow, that makes you so beautiful”, they are plastic and not the people whose opinions you really need to accept.

What matters most is how you feel about yourself. Do you need an accessory to feel beautiful or can you look in the mirror and accept the beauty that stares back at you?

You can only answer that question. Nothing is more important than self-respect and how you value yourself.

Lastly, if hair extensions are something you really want than get them! Save your money and get them.

Thanks for listening to me rant . . .
