10 Tips for Teens for School Success

Teen Speaker Jeff Yalden

Ever look at your report card or progress reports and think to yourself, “Gee, I could do better!”, or as a parent ever wonder how your kids could improve their grades?  Well, here is 10 Tips, from teen motivational speaker and teen expert, Jeff Yalden, that your teen can implement immediately to improve their overall grades.  As parents of teens looking for ways for your child to improve, I think these are ideas you can add to the refrigerator to hold your kids accountable too.

1.  Get to school on time

My first thought is, “Duh!”  The reality is this seems to be a bigger issue that we realize.  Get to school on time.  Wake up earlier if you have to.

2.  Eat a healthy lunch and breakfast

The day starts with a nutritional breakfast such as oatmeal, eggs, or a healthy bowl of cereal.  Pack your lunch too.  Watch your sugars!

3.  Use an agenda every day

Day planner, school agenda, or whatever keeps you on track.  Write it down and use it religiously.

4.  Go to Extra Help sessions 1X a week

Ask for extra help.  Even if you don’t need it, go anyways to improve overall.

5.  Get help on note taking strategies

Learning how to take notes is an art.  Learn from teachers on how to effectively take notes in class.

6.  Get a peer tutor and meet at least 2x a week

Nothing wrong with asking a friend for help and you two studying together.

7.  Schedule one-on-one extra help sessions with teacher during lunch, before, or after school

Again, ask for help and you shall receive.

8.  Use directed study time more effectively

When in study hall or given time to do your own work you should use that time wisely.  Be focused.

9.  Study with a friend

Who knows, maybe studying with a friend will teach you something you didn’t know.  Have fun and study with a friend.

10.  Do homework in the building after school

Do your homework at school before heading home for the day.  Use the library before the home interruptions.

Parents can use this information to help their kids become more focused and to effectively use time management to improve their overall scores in the classroom.
